Environmental Status

III. Ambient Acoustic Environment

The areal noise met their corresponding functional requirement, while traffic noise failed to meet its corresponding functional requirement.

1.Areal Ambient Noise

In 2005, the average equivalent sound level for the areal ambient noise was 57.3dB(A) in the daytime, 0.8dB(A) higher than that in 2004. While at night it was 49.8dB(A), 0.7dB(A) higher than that in 2004.

The recent five-year monitoring data showed that areal noise was compliant with the corresponding functional requirement, the overall level of which was stable.

2.Traffic Noise

The average traffic flow during day and night time on the arterial roads was 2128 vehicles/hour and 1094 vehicles/hour respectively, 100 vehicles/hour and 61 vehicles/hour less than that in 2004. The monitoring data showed that the average equivalent sound level of traffic noise during day and night time on the roadside in Shanghai in 2005 were 72.0dB(A) and 65.8dB(A), 0.3dB(A) and 0.4dB(A) lower than that in 2004 respectively.

According to the latest five-year monitoring data, traffic noise failed to meet its corresponding functional requirement in all the other three years except in the years of 2001 and 2002. The level of traffic noise differed from year by year but the overall tendency is on the rise.
